Argentina makes GPS use mandatory mine sites

BUENOS AIRES (miningweekly.com) - The government of Argentina has announced that the use of global positioning system (GPS) equipment is now a requirement for mines in the country.

Following the rescue for 33 miners after 69 days trapped in the San Jose mine, in Chile, Argentina and Chile signed an agreement to make the use of satellite tracking systems mandatory for vehicles entering a mine site.

The agreement will improve safety levels and ensure better care of the environment as well as people that work in the sector, according to the Argentine Mining Secretariat.

Another initiative to improve mine safety was the National Meeting for Mining Safety and Rescue, held on Tuesday this week, which was hosted by the national mining authorities.

More than 60 professionals, experts in security and prevention in mining projects, doctors and members of rescue brigades attended.

According to one of the speakers, 2009 was the Argentine mining industry's best year to date in terms of safety, "in a period where the sector grew exponentially in human resources".

The meeting was attended by two Chilean rescuers who took part in the rescue process of the 33 Chilean workers of the San Jose mine.

TRAINING

Argentina has also been conducting training course in various disciplines, including the use of satellite applications to create environmental studies to contribute to the sustainable development of the region.

The courses were provided by Argentine and Japanese institutions, under an agreement between the Argentine Geological Mining Service and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency.
