Repercussions of National Mining Day 2009 in Argentina: Barrick’s Pascua Lama will begin construction in 3Q 2009 and Troy´s Casposo to follow in 4Q.

May 7 was declared Mining Day in the country on 1813, with the passing of the first law to aid the development of Mining. Throughout the country, many festivities take place to commemorate a growing part of the economy that has been present since independence in the country that owes its name to Silver (Argent, from French).

On spite of the global crisis, Argentina continues to crystallize projects and mines of significant importance, further enhancing an already dynamic sector. Along with the four mines opened between November and April of 2009, this year’s mining day had two meaningful announcements.

The most significant took place in Buenos Aires and involved the Argentinean President, Cristina Fernandez and Barrick’s CEO Aaron Regent. At the Pink House, a formal ceremony took place where many authorities where present, such as Canadian Ambassador in Argentina, Tim Martin. This follows the agreement of both governments to divide the taxes according to the actual ore reserves, -70% in Chile and 30% in Argentina- along with the granting of pending permits. Initial contracts will be awarded during May and mobilization for on site construction infrastructure, and early critical path work, including camp construction, will take place in the third quarter, with construction scheduled to begin by September. The mine will require an mega investment estimated in 2,8 - 3,0 billion dollars (for Spanish readers, 2.800-3.000 millones de dolares).

For their side, Troy’s managers met provincial and national officials and informed that they had completed the option process to acquire Casposo from Intrepid Mines, and intend to start construction before the end of this year. Troy’s track record in South America is remarkable, they already have two mines and it only took them between 14 to 16 months to put them into production. The investment for Casposo is estimated in 100 million dollars.

These two new mines will join the 16 existing mines, 12 of which are metalliferous. The current type of production shows a over 30% of the mines producing silver and gold. This trend will continue to be deepened with Pascua Lama and Casposo, which will be also producing those two metals.

The impact of these announcements is extremely important; not only the production of the country will soon increase again, but also there will be a myriad of business opportunities and jobs for those companies and professionals specialized in constructing projects.

Repercusiones del día de la minería 2009 en Argentina: Pascua Lama, de Barrick, comenzará su construcción el tercer trimestre de 2009 y Casposo, de Troy, lo seguirá a fin de año.

El 7 de mayo fue declarado como día nacional de la minería en 1813, con la sanción de la primera ley de fomento a la minería. Alrededor del país, muchas festividades conmemoran a esta pujante parte de la economía, que ha estado presente desde la independencia en el país que debe su nombre a la plata (Argent, del francés).

A pesar de la crisis global, Argentina continúa cristalizando proyectos y minas de importancia significativa, potenciando de este modo a un sector ya dinámico. Junto a las 4 minas que se abrieron entre noviembre y abril de 2009, este día de la minería tuvo dos anuncios significativos.

El más importante tuvo lugar en Buenos Aires y involucró a la Presidenta, Cristina Fernández y el CEO de Barrick, Aaron Regent. En la Casa Rosada, una ceremonia con la presencia de destacadas autoridades, como el embajador canadiense en Argentina, Tim Martin, se llevó a cabo. Este anuncio llega luego de que ambos gobiernos acordaron dividir los impuestos de acuerdo a la porción de reservas minerales en cada uno -70% en Chile y 30% en Argentina-, junto con el otorgamiento de permisos sectoriales pendientes. Los contratos iniciales se adjudicarán en Mayo, y la movilización para la infraestructura de la obra, caminos críticos y el inicio de la construcción del campamento tendrán lugar en el tercer trimestre, estando previsto comenzar la construcción misma en Septiembre. La mina requerirá una mega inversión de 2.800-3.000 millones de dólares.

Por su parte, los directivos de Troy se reunieron con autoridades provinciales y nacionales y les informaron que han completado el proceso de opción de compra para adquirir Casposo de su dueño anterior, Intrepid Mines, y que planean comenzar la construcción antes de fin de año. El desempeño de Troy en Sudamérica es impecable, ya cuentan con 2 minas y solo les tomó entre 14 a 16 meses ponerlas en producción. La inversión estimada para Casposo ronda los 100 millones de dólares.

Estas dos minas se unirán a las 16 existentes, de las cuales 12 son metalíferas. El tipo de producción de las minas activas actualmente muestra más de un 30% de oro y plata. Esta tendencia se acrecentará con Pascua Lama y Casposo, que también producirán estos metales.

El impacto de estos anuncios es muy significativo; no sólo la producción del país pronto volverá a aumentar, sino que también existirá una gran cantidad de oportunidades de negocios y trabajo para aquellas compañías y profesionales que están especializados en la construcción de proyectos.

Realmente, un “Día de la Minería” para recordar.
